Flughafen Innsbruck Kranebitten (INN) is one of Austria’s six international airports. The number of scheduled flights is rather limited but many charter flights, especially in winter, offer cheap tickets to bargain hunters. Innsbruck Airport is very conveniently located just minutes outside the capital of Tyrol.
Welcome Air (2W) is based at Innsbruck Airport (INN) and offers the largest number of destinations from Tyrol. Welcome Air uses mostly Dornier Turboprop planes and offers both regular and charter flights. Welcome Air is not a low-cost airline and focuses mostly on business travelers but occasionally does offer special deals and cheap tickets to Innsbruck.
Welcome Air flies from Innsbruck Airport (INN) at least daily on weekdays to Göteburg (via Hannover), Graz (twice daily), and Hannover. Welcome Air also has less regular flights to Kristiansand, Nice, Olbia, and Stavangar – most of these flights have stops en route.
Austrian Airlines flights from Innsbruck Airport (INN) are mostly to connect to long-distance flights at Vienna (up to six daily flights) and Frankfurt International Airport (four times daily). Austrian Airlines also has weekly flights from Innsbruck to Antalya, Klagenfurt, and Kos.
Several other destinations can be reached on direct flights from Innsbruck Airport (INN). However, during summer, these flights are often only once or twice per week.
Charter flights are often available for cheap flights to Innsbruck Airport (INN). During summer, these flights are mostly to take Austrians to popular beach destinations in the Mediterranean region. However, during winter, the number of flights increases dramatically with charter airlines bringing skiers from all over Europe to this popular winter sports region.
Munich Airport (MUC) in Bavaria, Germany is the closest major airport to Innsbruck. For intercontinental travelers, as well as many European fliers, it often makes more sense to fly to Munich Airport with its enormous number of flights and continue the journey from there to Innsbruck by road or rail.
Traveling by train from Munich Airport (MUC) to Innsbruck is surprisingly cumbersome and time consuming. The fastest journey is just less than three hours but closer to four is more common. Transfers are needed in Munich (either at the Hauptbahnhof, Ost, or Passing stations) and often at Rosenheim too.
Renting a car at Munich Airport, or booking an airport transfer service, especially when traveling in a small group, are better options. By road, the distance is 200 km (125 miles) for a traveling time of less than two hours.
Transportation to Innsbruck Airport is very simple by car or bus. The airport is just minutes to the west of Innsbruck with easy road access from the highways in Tyrol and even the Brenner Pass from Northern Italy.
Innsbruck municipal bus F runs four times per hour in 18 minutes from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) to Innsbruck Flughafen (Airport). Buses and trains are available to many destinations in Tyrol and Bavaria from Innsbruck.
To get to the airport by car, use exit Völs-Kranebitte or Innsbruck-West from the Autobahn A12. When traveling from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald in Germany, it is possible to reach the airport by using country roads and thereby avoid the need for buying an Autobahn Vignette.
