Step back in time with Panorama Tours, Maria and the von Trapp family in Salzburg to see the classic locations where the cult Sound of Music took to the silver screen.

For those with a voracious appetite for all things von Trapp, the Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg is a must see.

Many of the 1965 Oscar-winning film musical's famous scenes were shot in and around this historical Austrian town and a bus tour claiming to be the real deal is on hand to give visitors a glimpse of all the locations made famous by Maria and friends.

The now-cult film version of the original musical tells the story of Maria as she is sent from her convent life to become the governess to seven children of a naval commander, as Austria falls under the occupation of the Third Reich.

The Original Sound of Music Tour

Panorama Tours were involved in the making of the film itself, its buses ferrying crew and the stars around Salzburg and the nearby Salzkammergut lakes region where much of the beautiful landscapes were shot. Fast forward to the present day and Panorama Tours takes fans hooked on the film from all around the world on half-day tours led by an enthusiastic English-speaking guide.

Stops on the tour include the wedding church at Mondsee, scene of Julie Andrew’s character Maria’s wedding to Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp, played by Christopher Plummer, as well as Leopoldskron Castle, home to the film’s boating scene on the lake and also Salzburg’s beautiful Mirabell Gardens.

The ever popular tour gives visitors a chance to test their singing voices too, with recordings played of the full repertoire of songs as the bus travels between destinations: including ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Sixteen Going On Seventeen’ and ‘Edelweiss’, the song named after the flower that has become a symbol of the Alps.

The guide reveals plenty of behind the scenes gossip and stories from the production, from the reason behind the boating scene on the lake needing to be reshot several times to which actors were really singing in the film and which were dubbed in.

Salzburg

Although Salzburg residents are noted for being oblivious to the fame of this classic film shot on their doorstep, any trip to this wonderful town nestling beneath the Alps would not be complete with sampling this tour.
